The Alabama Mesonet is made up of eleven combination meteorological/soil profile stations and twelve soil profile stations. The combination stations are also part of the USDA NRCS SCAN network. ALMNet is run by the Alabama A & M UniversityHSCaRS Center. The original ALMNet stations (seven SCAN sites) were installed February 2002. Since June 2003 the Alabama Mesonet should really be called the Alabama/Tennessee Mesonet, since the USDA NRCS added three stations in adjacent counties north of the state line. In August 2003 one soil profile station (Bragg Farm) was converted to a SCAN site. If you have a broad band internet connection, you can view a QuickTime movie (96.8 MB) showing the installation of some of the weather stations.
The ALMNet stations were a key component for bringing one portion of the Soil Moisture Experiment 2003 (SMEX '03) to Huntsville.
AMLNet is about to get larger. We have received funding from NOAA to install addtional stations in the state of Alabama.
